Happy Birthday Trent!
37 years old today! We had a pretty low key day. Trent went to work. The kids were at school. I made cupcakes and as soon as the kids got home we headed up to Trent's work at the FASB and we surprised him again. He is such a great husband and father.

One year older and wiser too????
This birthday post has been hanging over my head. You see once you start a habit like posting your weight on your birthday it is an easy thing to do provided your weight is the same or less than the year before -- because you have already come to terms with that number. But I love having this silly accountability -- it really does motivate me.
So here are the details . . . I am 35 years old. (is that possible???) and this morning I weighed 156 lbs. (yes, I just had a baby 13 weeks ago) but I so wanted to be back at my happy 153.
I am excited for the next year. I joined a gym. I registered for a triathlon this June. I am on a biggest loser team that starts Monday. I am determined to be well below 153 by my next birthday. I have never lost weight before (besides baby weight) and have been really quite happy at 153 for probably 10 years. But that number puts my BMI slightly above the "overweight" mark and I would like to get in the healthy range. I figure now is as good a time as any.
Other than that, my goal is to post a photo / post every day this year. Last year I had the goal to do one post a week on each blog -- (i didn't make it!) but what is life if you don't have high expectations for yourself. I love the quote "Aim for the moon, if you miss at least you'll be in the stars."

Adam's 4th Birthday
Adam is growing and growing. Everyday he has some amazing way that his muscles will grow. (Today he said, "If I eat 2 bowls of cereal my muscles will get big today") He is smart and funny and easygoing. I love hanging out with him during the day. He loves cars, trucks, playing outside, baseball, and anything else stereotypically boy. We had a fun birthday party with many of his friends (despite the rain outside).

Happy Birthday to Madelyn!
Madelyn turned 6 years old on July 29th. It is hard to believe that our little girl is so big. She thought long and hard about what kind of birthday party to have. She decided on a butterfly party.
So I learned a new skill (facepainting) and we had fun. Each girl designed their own butterflies color scheme.
We played caterpillar, caterpillar, butterfly (duck, duck, goose). We had a butterfly hunt in the yard (for hidden foam butterflies). And of course cupcakes and icecream!
Here she is writing all her thank-you notes!

What have I been up to
Be Prepared, this may be long, will definately be random, but hopefully you will laugh along with me.
Q. How does a busy mother of four read 5 books in a week?
A. You start out with 2 really sick kids (4 ear infections, strep throat and pneumonia), then you sit on the couch with them holding them, letting them watch all the TV they want (since they can't do anything else) and you try, try to do something else, but they just whine unless you sit right next to them so you finally pull out all the books you want to read and get some reading done during the days of soothing.
Q. Do I believe in spring cleaning?
A. Absolutely, just last week I thought, "do you think if I start a spring cleaning routine it will hasten the onset?" and then I laughed and looked at the weather forecast (which by the way has predicted anywhere from 12-24 inches of snow for my area in the next 48 hours) and pushed all thoughts of spring and cleaning out of mind. However, you know the phrase, "Some people are born with greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them" Well here is my version, "Some people are born with desires to spring clean, Others have spring cleaning thrust upon them." So thank-you to the school nurse for calling and requesting I come pick up all 3 girls from school due to lice. (mind you this was within 20 minutes of being back at school after a week and a day break, and the snow day, and the sick day -- so they had already been home for a week and a half solid).
Q. How do you treat lice?
A. You cry a little (OK a lot). Then you spend a small fortune on toxic chemicals, and then a large fortune on "homeopathic" remedies, and you plan on sitting and combing hair for hours and hours and hours.
Q. What are the ideal circumstances for getting lice?
A. 1. Warm sunny weather (so you can comb for nits outside with the help of the sun to see those suckers and the knowledge that the little nits are falling on the ground outside not on your couch or chair.
2. When you only have boys living at home. (just give them a buzz and save the time and money)
3. Warm sunny weather (so each bed does not have 3 quilts on it, 2 extra blankets and a few stuffed animals)
4. Warm sunny weather (so that each child had not been wearing a long sleeved shirt, a sweater, a hoodie, a winter coat, a scarf, a hat, and gloves)
5. When your dryer is working! (mine was, but everytime I called my mom to complain about how bad I have it she would remind me that when we all got it as kids, our dad was out of town and the dryer was broken -- so I always felt like I couldn't complain too much -- oh but I wanted too!)
Q. How many of these ideal circumstances did I have?
A. Only the dryer.
Q. In the meantime, Trent had a birthday, did you celebrate?
A. Trent ended up having to travel to Cleveland on his birthday and the day after, so on the night before (when he was working late in the city) I put all the kids in the car along with some cupcakes and we drove straight to Times Square (where a dear co-worker of Trent's whom I had never met and who has no kids) greeted me at the curb and graciously took all 4 kids and the cupcakes into the lobby while I braved the NY parking scene.
Q. Is that co-worker ever going to have kids now, or did this experience teach him a thing or two about the need for prevention?
A. I haven't asked him, but I am sure the thought crossed his mind, as he ended up waiting for me in the lobby for a long time.
Q. Why so long, did you get pulled over by any NY cops?
A. Yes, but the kids were not in the car so it doesn't count because no one need ever know.
Q. Why did you get pulled over?
A. For relying too heavily on the GPS, which clearly said, "Turn left on 7th Avenue." So I turned left on 7th avenue . . . but I failed to notice the small white sign that prohibits left turns between 6 and 7 P.m. Unfortunately the cop did not fail to notice. After looking at my license, registration, and insurance (which he first asked if i chose to carry insurance . . . What???? don't you have to have insurance???? Apparantly not in NY -- silly me-- that sure explains a lot of cabs reckless driving), he did not give me a ticket-- just a very stern and loud, "Read the signs, LADY!"

Happy Birthday
I am 34 years old today. Here are my posts from 33 years and 32 years. As I am nearly always the one taking pictures, I always just end up cropping a photo of the whole family to get one of me. So this year, I decided to ask my friend Lilian to take my photo for me. They turned out great. (although next year I am going to go and get my hair colored right before the pictures).
I am still 153 lbs.

Catherine's Birthday Party Invitation
This year Catherine is intrigued with mysteries. She initially wanted a "Geronimo Stilton" birthday party, but now after reading the book "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" and going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the first time -- she decided a party with a mystery like the book would be fun. Wish me luck in planning the mystery part -- I'll let you know how it goes!

My three year old boy!
There are just not enough words to tell how sweet Adam is. He is just such a happy, fun, nice boy. He loves being a boy. He loves balls, cars, trains, dirt, airplanes, motorcycles, boats, and mud. He loves being with his sisters, and he loves teasing them relentlessly.
That it is even possible that he is already 3 years old is unbelievable to me. Enjoy these photos of his big day!

Madelyn turned 5
Almost 2 weeks ago, Madelyn turned five years old. She is such a sweet girl. She is excited to start Kindergarten and go to school with her big sisters. She wanted a Hello Kitty party. We invited all her friends and hoped for good weather. But like most days here this summer . . . we got a lot of rain. So we had a big indoor party.
One of our birthday traditions is that after our kids open their presents, we set them aside and don't play with them or unpackage them until that evening. Then we put all the other kids to bed and just the birthday girl stays up late and gets to play with her new toys all by herself (or with Mom and Dad). It is really fun to do. I tell them they can stay up on their birthday as late as they want. If they make it to midnight, I inform them that it is now no longer their birthday and that they stayed up as late as they could on "their birthday" and then they go to bed. Madelyn made it to midnight. She honestly did not even seem tired, but as soon as her head hit the pillow, she was asleep.

Trent turned 35!
Trent had a great 35th birthday. He got to wake up early and go to work. (My kids really think that things like school and work ought to be suspended on birthdays!). His co-workers provided some great humor by copying some of Dwight and Jim's birthday celebration ideas from the office. 
When he got home he got to blow out the candles with the kids!
Julianne had made him a nice card.
And Catherine had made him a birthday necklace. I love it. Don't you love how she added inspirational thought on it?

Thanks!
On my birthday, I went to get the mail and inside the mailbox was the cutest wrapped package. It was all wrapped in clear cellophane with a beautiful ribbon. I could see immediately a box of chocolates (from a local CT chocolatier) and a book. I was so excited to open it, eat it, read it and of course see who had been so thoughtful.
But there was no card. I looked and looked and then looked again. I walked back out to the mailbox to see if it was still in there. (it wasn't) I carefully walked back to the house to see if I had dropped it (i hadn't).
And then I made a few phone calls -- I thought at first it must be my friend who loves ribbon --
nope -- then maybe my visting teacher from church-- nope well then maybe this friend -- nope and so on.
I still don't know who gave it to me. But I loved getting it. The anonymity thing has even been kind of fun -- I just really hope that the person meant for it to be anonymous and isn't sitting at home wondering why I never mentioned the gift or said thank-you.
I have decided not to ask anymore people about it -- although it does make for some funny responses like "Oh . . . did you just have a birthday?"
The thing is I just feel like I am missing knowing who a great friend is. Being new to the area I don't have a good feel for what quiet friend I have made who would have done such a nice thing. It has made me start to see everyone as a better friend simply because it could have been that person who did it and I will never know.
So, anonymous friend, if for some reason you are reading this . . . thanks -- It really made my day.

The Pet Party
For Catherine's birthday party she wanted a pet theme. So at her party, we enlisted the help of our neighbors and friends to bring their sweet pets to show everyone at the party. We had 5 dogs, 1 kitten, and 1 bird come. It was a hit. The kids were so good and calm. Enjoy the pictures.

Happy Birthday to me!

Many of you commented (both on my blog and to me personally) about including my weight and I will say this -- all year I knew I was gonna post it again today and so although it did not cause any drastic weight loss -- It was nice to know that there would be some accountability if I had gained any. And if I lost 1 pound a year or even stayed the same weight year to year it would be a victory.

Adam's 2nd birthday
So, Adam's birthday was pretty low key. It was on a Friday and I had big plans to celebrate at home that night . . . but then Trent missed the New Canaan train and would have had to wait an hour for the next on which would mean that all the kids would be asleep. So, instead, Trent hopped the train to Stamford (because there is one every 10 minutes), we all hopped in the car and we picked him up and went to eat at California Pizza Kitchen. We had a great time, but alas . . . NO PICTURES since I was in a hurry to get to the train station.
Here we are on Saturday morning. Instead of birthday cake, we had pancakes. Instead of candles, we had matches. Instead of extended family all gathered round . . .
we had Skype video phone calls.
And you know, Adam didn't seem to mind one bit!
